Town Hall's 2019 proposed budget is over 300 pages long. The good thing about the budget is that all of the new spending requests are clearly outlined with separate reports. Each report tries to substantiate the request for increased spending. I took the time (I hope our Council members do the same) to go through the budget. I compiled a chart showing all the new positions that are proposed and what those positions will cost. Here is the chart.
The chart above shows the proposed new positions, the department that made the request, the annual cost associated with that position, and the pages in the budget which identify the position and the cost. You can see a full copy of the budget on Town Hall's website.
Town Hall wants to add 10 new positions to staff costing an additional $664,283 per year. Here are a few questions I would like to ask you, as taxpayers.
Would you support getting rid of your Chief of Police to get an Events Coordinator?
Would you give up your Deputy Police Chief so you can hire a Policy & Committee Coordinator?
Would you trade your Police Officer for a Communications Officer?
That's what Town Hall proposes to do.
They disbanded the Amherstburg Police Service to save money (ostensibly). I don't really believe that we are going to save money after giving away our Police Department to the City of Windsor. However, the report to Council claimed that we would save $567,802 on average every year. Here is the highlight from the report:

But Town Hall wants to spend $664,383 on hiring more people. That would be $664,383 every year. In other words, Town Hall proposes to spend all the money "saved" from the policing switch, on other job positions, new job positions. None of it is going back to you, the taxpayer. Town Hall is going to spend it all.
It is a commentary on the current state of priorities at Town Hall. Having control of our own police force is not a priority. Reducing property taxes is not a priority. Holding the line on property taxes is not a priority.
But hiring two Events Coordinators to throw more parties, that's a priority.
